Mummified Monk to be showed publicly

2015-11-17

Today, a ceremony of exaltation of a mummified corpse was held at the Gandantegchinlen monastery in Ulaanbaatar.

The mummy is believed to be the body of the "living" saint, agramba (high-ranking monk) Ravsalyn Sanjaijav who lived about 200 years ago. The mummy was found in January at a private residence.
The shrine will be showed to the public on Wednesday and Thursday in Ulaanbaatar before being returned to its sacred tomb in Arkhangai province, so the worshipers are enabled to pray.
A series of studies has proved that the mummified corpse belongs to Ravsaliin Sanjaijav, the “live” saint Agramba who was born in 1826 in the territory of Tsakhir soum, Arkhangai province.
Sanjaijav used to take the pulse and treat people using self-made medicines, to heal pain and injures, and to prepare number of disciples for medication and curing.
Until today, it was believed that the process of mummifying had been done with external help. However, Geser Lama Ts. Chultemjamts /1816-1894/ and his disciple R. Sanjaijav were assumed to had mummified themselves with their magic force sitting in lotus position.
Some say that no natural hazards were occurred in the last 120 years in the area where the mummies were kept.
